Koala is a native animal from Australia which is also referred to as ‘Koala Bear’ even though it isn’t a bear. The Australian Koala is a series by The Perth Mint, the first coin from the series was minted in 2007. The 2018 edition of the Koala is the first coin which was made out of 999.9 Silver hence the popularity for this coin has increased ever since. The Australian Koala Silver coins are very popular worldwide due to the intricate design and limited mintage of 300,000 coins. The 1 Ounce version of the coin has a face value of AUD 1.
The reverse side of the coin features the Australian Koala sitting on an Eucalyptus Tree with the gum leaves and two blossoms in the background. The initials ‘NM’ of the designer Natasha Muhl is embedded on the leftmost area of the branch. Above the gum leaves to the left is a ‘P’ mark which denotes The Perth Mint. The words “Australian Koala” are inscribed on the top of the coin along with the year of the issue, weight and purity, “2018”, “1 Oz” and “9999 Silver”, respectively.
The obverse side of the Koala features her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II whose effigy was done by Ian Rank Broadley whose initials ‘IRB’ can be seen below the Queen. A very interesting fact about the coin from the series is that the Queen’s effigy coincides with the Queen’s age. The top of the obverse side has the inscription “Elizabeth II” and “Australia” along with “1 Dollar” at the bottom.
The edges of the coin are reeded which overall gives a good texture.
Overall, it is not hard to tell why The Australian Koala is one of the best selling coins, Perth Mint has an excellent reputation in minting world class bullion.
