2800TH Nirvan Kalyanak of Bhagwan Shri Parshvanath
2800TH Nirvan Kalyanak of Bhagwan Shri Parshvanath
In the historical, prosperous city of Vārāṇasī, 2,900 years ago, King Aśhvasen and Queen Vāmādevī were blessed with the birth of a prince in the midnight of Pauṣh Kṛiṣhṇa 10/11. The child was named Pārhśva Kumār. Since his birth, Pārhśva Kumār was endowed with three types of Gyan (knowledge)—Mati (sensory), Śhruti (scriptural) and Avadhi (clairvoyance) .
From an early age, Parshva Kumar demonstrated fearlessness and inclination towards religious life. Despite living a royal life, Parshva Kumar remained detached and absorbed in spiritual contemplation. Recognizing the appropriate time for renunciation, Parshva Kumar began distributing his worldly possessions.
Realising the transitory nature of worldly comforts, Pārśhv resolved to embrace asceticism. On Pauṣh Kṛiṣhṇa Ekādaśī, he plucked out five fistfuls of his hair and initiated himself into monkhood. Immediately upon his initiation, he attained the fourth knowledge—Manahparyāy Gyān (a kind of telepathy). On the eighty-fourth day of his spiritual journey, i.e. on Chaitra Krishna 4 in deep meditation under a Ghaṭākī tree, he attained Keval Gyan (omniscience) and Kewal Darshan (omniperception) at Varanasi.
Pārśhvanath Bhagwan moved extensively and delivered profound religious discourses. As the time of his Nirvāṇ approached, Pārśhvanāth Bhagwan ascended Mount Sammet Śhikharwith thirty three monks and on Śhrāvan Śhukla 7/8, in the Viśākhā constellation, Bhagwan attained Nirvan (liberation) after a month fast.
Jain Āchārya Śhrī Jinpiyuṣhsāgar Sūrijī M.S. has identified him as one of the most influential Tīrthaṅkar as temples dedicated to Pārśhvanath Bhagwan outnumber temples of other 23 Tīrthaṅkars combined. His legacy endures as can be found by numerous temples, where veneration by devotees is done regularly.
Srī Lalit Kumar Nahata has provided information that Nirvāṇ of Pārśhvanāth Bhagwan took place 250 years before that of Mahāveer Bhagwan, who attained Nirvāṇ on Diwali. This being the 2550th Nirvāṇ year of Mahāveer Bhagwan, it follows that this is the 2800th Nirvāṇa year of Pārśhvanāth Bhagwan as 2900th birth year since Pārśhvanāth Bhagwan lived for 100 years.
