Commemorative Coins :

India Government Mint, Mumbai also manufactures commemorative coins apart from
manufacturing circulation coins. These coins are issued to commemorate events of historical
and social importance and to celebrate various accomplishments of public and private
organizations. India Government Mint, Mumbai has been releasing commemorative coins since
1964. The commemorative coins issued by the Mint are of very high quality and have a great
demand among coin collectors and numismatists.

Commemorative coins are of two types
Proof Coins
Uncirculated Coins


Proof Coins:

Proof coins are the high quality commemorative coins which have a frozen effect on the surface
design of the coin with a mirror finish. These coins are marked with the symbol 'M' to indicate
that they are manufactured at Mumbai Mint. These coins are sold at a premium price as they
are manufactured with high quality standards and have high numismatic value.
Uncirculated Coins:
Uncirculated coins are the high quality commemorative coins which have mirror finish on the
surface but without any frozen effect on the design. These coins are marked with a diamond
symbol to indicate they are stamped at Mumbai Mint. The uncirculated coins are also sold at
premium but they are priced a little lower than the proof coins.
History


In 1964 production of commemorative coins was started. The first commemorative coin was in
the memory of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru.

Acharya Tulsi:


Shri Acharya Tulsi was born on 20th October 1914 at Ladnun, Rajasthan. At the age of eleven i.e.
on 5th December, 1925, Shri Acharya Tulsi renounced all the comforts and temptations of a
householder’s life and got initiated by Acharya Kalugani at Ladnun.
Acharya Kalugani proclaimed Shri Acharya Tulsi as his successor. Acharya Tulsi thus became
Ninth Acharya of the Jain Terapanth Sect at Gangapur, Rajasthan on 26th August 1936.
Anuvrat movements, De-addiction Campaign, Preksha Meditation are few of Shri Acharya Tulsi’s
efforts for social reforms and the benefit of mankind. Considering the accomplishments Shri
Acharya Tulsi was rewarded with several National Awards, amongst them “The Indira Gandhi
Award” for National Integration being a prominent one.


Shri Acharya Tulsi has made good number of records on his tour of almost the whole of India,
that too on foot. The numbers display that the kilometers travelled by him is approximately
1,00,000 kms. Utilizing a vast portion of lifetime in journeys, Shri Acharya Tulsi still took out
time to write over a hundred books on different subjects and in different languages.
Being a courageous traveller of the path of truth, Shri Acharya Tulsi whole heartedly embraced
the inevitable prospect of death on 23 rd June, 1997 at Gangashahar, Rajasthan.
